Wealden New Garden Waste Service

We have had a good response from people wanting to sign up to the new chargeable service, so much so that we have been very busy on the phones. Some customers have expressed worries about our deadline of 1 June, saying they were going to be away and didn’t want to miss the chance to sign up.

Our deadline was always a soft one, with the intention to encourage people to sign up sooner rather than later. We have therefore decided to announce an extension to 13 June to allow people a little more time to sign up – particularly as half term is coming up and many residents may be on holiday.

Sign up NOW for your new Garden Waste Service Wealden Residents can now sign up for the Council’s new chargeable garden waste collection service. The new service will start from 1 July. Joining this new service is optional and the annual subscription is £50 for each bin.

Collections will take place fortnightly except for a two-week suspension during the Christmas and New Year period.

We’ve set up an easy way to sign up to the new service. To ensure your garden waste collections are uninterrupted, please sign up and pay at my.wealden.gov.uk by 1 June 2019. If you don’t already have a My Wealden account, you will need to create one. You can also request a second bin if you need one for an additional £50 per year. If you do not have access to the internet you can still register by calling 01323 443322.

If you choose not to join the new service, you do not need to contact us. The final free collection will be your last scheduled garden waste collection in June. If you do not wish to subscribe, we will need to remove the bin for re-use or recycling. Please continue to place the empty bin out on your scheduled collection days and it will be removed by the end of July.

If you don’t want to take part in the new service but still have garden waste, we recommend that this is composted at home. Special value compost converters and food waste digesters are available from as little as £18.50 through East Sussex County Council. For full details on these offers or to order, visit www.escc.getcomposting.com or call Straight Plc 0844 5714444.

Or you can take you garden waste to a Household Waste Recycling Site where it will be accepted free of charge.

Garden waste cannot be put into the refuse or recycling bin. These bins will not be emptied if they contain garden waste.

The garden waste from the Council’s brown bin collections is taken to Veolia’s Woodlands In-Vessel Composting Facility in Whitesmith to be turned into soil conditioner. The large scale site enables faster composting by utilising higher temperatures. The compost is used to create soil enhancer which can be purchased from Household Waste Recycling Sites across East Sussex or is available in bulk from www.pro-grow.com.

For further information on recycling, including tips on composting, and how to reduce the amount of waste you produce, visit www.wealden.gov.uk.

More information about garden waste sign up scheme is being posted out to all Wealden households receiving the current garden waste service.
